Service Pack 1 needed to install XP?

by Ross37 / November 16, 2004 2:42 AM PST

When I try to install XP pro on my machine I get a prompt to insert a disk containing Service Pack 1. This has never happened before. When I continue the istallation without the Service Pack, Windows loads and runs but not all programs are avaliable ie I don't have Windows Explorer, etc. The start panel does not list all the programs it should.

I have a new hard drive in the system.

I ran into this with a HP XP restore CD. The full up Retail versions never do that.

I am using a full retail cd. What should I do?

Nothing odd, like formatting the drive prior to install?

There have been those that try the old ways.

If your drive is partitoned and formatted by XP at time of install, there is no way that it would even know that a SP1 even exists.

If this is a real XP CD that came out before any of the service packs, then it will install without any requests of any kind.

Note: If SP1 is not incorporated into the XP CD, then installing on drives over 120 Gig will not work correctly.

Take it to a machine that is working and slipstream SP2 into the install.

Autostreamer does this easily.
