As to your second question, the VM could be faster than the old C2D but since graphics is not dedicated, graphic apps are usually slower as graphics is virtual and not direct.
By the way I've run VMs over the years but only to support a setup that I don't want to keep around or run all the time. They are useful but always pale to the real thing in some way.
I'm new to the technical side of computer so be easy on me if this is a stupid question. If i run a server at home and run virtual machines off of it, will the computers i use be as powerful as the server or the machine i am on?
For example, lets say i have a server with an i7 processor and I allow 16gb of ram on a virtual machine, and i open the virtual machine on a desktop with a core 2 duo and 4 gb of ram. will the computer be as slow as the desktop or as fast as the server?
