Question

Server randomly disconnects in Mavericks

May 3, 2014 12:12AM PDT

Since upgrading to Mavericks last year I have had server issues. The main one being that the computer will randomly drop server connections. I have a two computers in my office. My workstation is computer A, the other workstation is computer B. The server (G Force external drive) is attached to computer B. Besides dropping connections, when I start up in the morning, my computer doesn't always automatically connect to server. I have to manually connect. I then have to delete all my sidebars and add them back again. A huge waste of time when you're doing this 3-10 times a week. Another problem is that I have permissions set to read and write for all but any file I anyone creates only has permission for the user who created the file. So everytime we create a new indesign file, we have to do a command-I and change permissions manually. Any help appreciated.

Answer
I'd talk to G Force about drops.

http://www.amazon.com/Fantom-Force-External-Drive-GF3B1000U/dp/B004IYJX0C for example looks like a common USB drive that would have settings to explore about power savings. That is, it's not a server from what I can see and with the drive to save power today the defaults may be to let drives spin down. So since it's not a true server that explains part of what's up.

As to the permissions thing as I read http://support.apple.com/kb/ts4149 it looks to me that nothing is amiss here. Now why I write that is I've been around networking since before Novell or the PC or Apple. So while some may think it's incorrect for the default to be just that lone person, it's proper. Try the article or just ask Apple for more specifics.

I have one like that.

Nice looking thing. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013LRLUM/

But those interfaces can sleep so the drive can, on this not a server system would disconnect. I'd dive into sleep settings all around (too many for me to list here) and see if it's OK.

Also, WiFi is subject to interference so stay wired until this is sorted.

We're hardwired.

Everything in the shop is hardwired. Sometimes I have 3-4 freelancers with their laptops. Hardwire all the way. Computer is set to never sleep.

Ask about power saving settings.

These are in the OS, and devices so I can't know your preferences for the handful of areas to check.
