I have two desktops and two laptops connected to a Linksys router. One of the desktops is my server, but it's not a server. I have a slave HD on it and it is shared. I can also share files on the other PCs. That desktop also has my web site on it running Xitami web server software (free).

Hey all,
I just got my hands on an old pc that i really have just no use for. normaly i would put ubuntu into it and donate to some one that needs a pc to type, email, and web surf on but the number of people that need a pc that i know have been deplinished becase i do this often enough. Someone suggested to me to turn it into a server for my house because i have a laptop and a desk top as well as the 3 or for other computers in my house. All except one run windows the other runs ubuntu.
The problem is that i don't really know anything about servers except that you can run newtworks off them, and the basic jazz that you learn in "intro to networking". If any one has idea where i can find a how to to solve this problem that doesn't cost $$ then let me know. also what is a good os to use. I hear suse and ubuntu are good but Then again I know that red hat is used alto for networking. Also i got an invite to beta a windows home server. Yeah a microsoft product running all my computers... I don't know... I have not had any real problems with the company my self but... yeah...
Any way any advice would help.
P.S. I have DSL at home and a wireless router, and a spare switch if any of that helps??
