Backlinks are useful in many ways like it increases your domain authority plus the existence of your website's domain at different platforms also forced google to crawl your website regularly and all these functions ultimately helps you in the improvement of your website's seo.

Basically the link to an external website or web page is called as backlink. Backlinks work in different manner. They help to promote your brand, boosts authority and also works well with social media etc.

Basically there are two types of backlinks which is internal and external and it's created to increase authority of the website and here's the definition from google it self:
"A backlink for a given web resource is a link from some other website to that web resource. A web resource may be a website, web page, or web directory."
