SENATE VOTES ON NATIONAL LANGUAGE

May 18, 2006 11:29PM PDT

The United States Senate, known for taking forever to pass any meaningful legislation, seems to be on a bit of a tear lately. Yesterday Senators voted 63-34 to make English the national language. It's about time. Actually, they didn't exactly use the words "national language." Instead, they chose to call it a "common and unifying language." Whatever.

This is a start. If you want to come to the United States and be a part of the culture, you should have to learn English. For too long, we have coddled people who expect to come here and continue speaking Spanish. So now we have English being taught as a second language. We have signs in both English and Spanish. And who can forget the most annoying thing of all: when you call a customer service line, being told to press a button if you speak English.

In fact, before you are granted citizenship into this country, you should be given a simple language test. If you cannot demonstrate your ability to speak the native language, you're out. Go home, learn English and then try again. It really is as simple as that.

its very true learn/read english to become a citizen

Reid calls language proposal racist
May 18, 2006 11:37PM PDT

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called a proposal to make English the official language "racist" on the Senate floor yesterday.
"This amendment is racist. I think it's directed basically to people who speak Spanish," the Democrat said during the already tense debate over immigration reform.
Moments later, the Senate approved the measure on a 63-34 vote. Virtually all Republicans were joined by 11 Democrats to approve the largely symbolic amendment. Immediately following that vote, the Senate approved a second amendment, declaring on a 58-39 vote that English is the "common and unifying language."
Such proposals enjoy overwhelming support among American voters.
A poll by Zogby International earlier this year found that 84 percent of Americans say English should be the official language of government operations. The same poll found that 77 percent of Hispanics agree.
And it's a bipartisan issue, according to the poll, which found that 92 percent of Republicans and 82 percent of Democrats approve making English the country's official language.
Mr. Reid's charge of racism caused a stir of whispers in the Senate chamber and gallery, and Sen. James M. Inhofe, the Oklahoma Republican who offered the amendment, was clearly offended

wow this man says its raciist to make english our nantive language dang i thought it was

Not racist -- but gingoistic and narrow-minded, Mark.
May 19, 2006 10:52PM PDT

And in the grand tradition of the Ku Klux Klan and the Know-Nothings -- not exactly America's greatest legacy. Hey, I have an idea -- let's make the national language Ojibawa, so all immigrants (and their descendants) are on an equal footing!

gingoistic?
May 19, 2006 11:05PM PDT

Is that a combination of jingoistic and gringo?

For what it's worth I believe many, if not most countries have official languages. I really can't get worked up by this one way or the other.

"...the grand tradition of the Ku Klux Klan and the Know-Nothings" is really a bit hysterical, and by that I don't mean ''funny'' (though it is that too).

well dk i see your ranting again
May 20, 2006 1:07AM PDT

America was founded by English speaking people.
not your Ojibawa,
if you want to speak Ojibawa, in your home feel free.
but in America its English not Ojibawa,
not Spanish, nor Russian , Hebrew its English
and as your snide remark at know nothings you should look closely at your rants.
if you moved (Ojibawa) would they have English as a ND language? i bet not.
were being invaded and you roll out the welcome mat.
they falsify tax returns etc. if i did that id be arrested.
and you say kkk we went after the kkk and what has that to do with this?

I'm kinda used to pidgin english being around quite a few Mexican Americans. My spelling/grammer is not that good, but would imagine at least a 7th grade education would help in determining that a period (.) or comma (,) is somewhere needed when writing.

I don't know if you care or not but you can add a google toolbar to IE or Fx. It includes a spell check, that's what I use for online forums, forms, etc. It works great, plus it has some other features. You can google 'google toolbar' for downloads. if you use Fx it's an extension option.

well with ff its none working
May 19, 2006 6:53AM PDT

till they get new as new version ff is ok
and if i leave a . or a , off or miss spell a word most people can understand it as speeling each wrdo correctly is some times over rated ehHappy

May 19, 2006 7:44AM PDT

you can get it if your using any Fx except maybe the beta version. It works on Fx 1.4 and 1.5. you can get it from cnet downloads also.
can't argue about content being more important, your thoughts are apparent

Sorry Mark
May 19, 2006 4:17PM PDT

I had no bad intentions at all and didn't try to belittle you at all! And there is nothing to "win" here so that part I don't understand!
I was just responding to your own comment. If you don't feel like fixing the problem don't do it. However I'd think that for someone who says that others should know English before becoming citizens and go through tests, it would be logical to be able to pass the test him/herself.

Language not tie that binds us.

>> For its next trick, maybe the Senate will pass a law regulating the flight patterns of house flies. That would be about as effective as something senators passed Thursday....

Point being, it?s an understandable misconception that common language equals unity, but it?s a misconception nonetheless. Regionalisms and dialects notwithstanding, blacks and whites have been speaking English at each other for 387 years. It has not noticeably unified them. The same holds true for North and South, gays and straights, blue states and red....

So what does unite nations? For some, it?s common blood. For us, it?s common values and truths held self-evident, like liberty and justice for all. That?s it. That?s the only tie that binds. Yet that slender tie and the idealism it bespeaks must still carry some cachet, else we would not have so many people around the world aching and aspiring to be us.

From where I sit, the nativist impulse to defend English is silly: Does anyone really think the language is going away? Worse, there is something in it that feels desperate and fearful and frankly, troubling, especially to the degree that it compromises the aforementioned tie that binds.

That tie is worthy of a spirited defense. The language, I think, can take care of itself. <<

Very true
May 21, 2006 11:41PM PDT

and I also think there is a need to be able to "exclude" some people from the unity. "Those who don't speak the language are not one of ours"-mentality. To build barriers doesn't only protect, but it locks out too and that's why I think this was such a big issue for some people. They have a need to protect their "castle" and there is a fear for the unknown.

when my grand parents came here to the USA legally
the wanted to be American, they spoke Yiddish, they learned to speak English
they didn't demand to have Yiddish signs all over
you forget americas an english country.
if you come here to live become us not have us become you.
why come here to become americans and keep your old lousey countrys values as why did they want to come here then?
