Senate OKs Border Fence, Backs Citizenship

May 17, 2006 5:43AM PDT

The Senate endorsed a chance at citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants Wednesday but also voted to build 370 miles of triple- layered fencing along the Mexican border in increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation.

Taken together, the votes gave fresh momentum to legislation that closely follows President Bush's call for a major overhaul of the nation's troubled immigration system.

The vote was 66-33 against a proposal that would have removed provisions giving illegal immigrants in the country more than two years an eventual chance at citizenship.

A few minutes earlier, the Senate had voted 83-16 in favor of construction of the fence and 500 miles of vehicle barriers, the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the measure.

The developments unfolded in a volatile political environment. The White House struggled for a second day to ease the concerns of House Republicans who contend that Bush favors amnesty for illegal immigrants, and demonstrators massed a few blocks from the Capitol demanding immigrant rights.

Construction of the barrier would send "a signal that open-border days are over. ... Good fences make good neighbors, fences don't make bad neighbors," said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. He said border areas where barriers already exist have experienced economic improvement and reduced crime.

"What we have here has become a symbol for the right wing in American politics," countered Sen. **** Durbin, D-Ill. He said if the proposal passed, "our relationship with Mexico would come down to a barrier between our two countries."

seems the dems may have a reason to allow them in like votes!

Electrify it too.

Forget the citizenship deal. These are ILLEGALS. Ship them all back. Make them re-enter legally. Then discuss citizenship.

Land mines? Are you kidding?
May 17, 2006 7:10AM PDT

They would have to be on our side of the border. What happens when an American civilian or border patrol officer trips one?

- Collapse -
well josh leth think this
May 17, 2006 7:15AM PDT

over, theres a wall and then theres a fence hmmm where to put the mines?
ill let you think about it.
but as you havent any experiance in war, or defence of an area ill help you out.

you put the mines between the wall and fence
and in spanish and english you post

warning MINES!
now there wont be any body walking in that area who belongs there unless you climb over the wall from the other side, and there invaders boom 1 less invader.
now when they see were serious they wont enter unlawfully.

I'm not against securing the borders but I am against killing people over this.

there invaders we must use all we can to hold back this enemy

Most of them....
May 17, 2006 7:54AM PDT

...are not "invading," Mark.

I agree that Fox is giving this issue a lot of lip service but not really doing anything. A big reason for that is that the illegals send a lot of money back home. The Mexican economy would suffer if that stopped, so he's trying to play both sides on this.

Historically...
May 17, 2006 8:33AM PDT

movements of this sort, where a significant amounts of people move into another country and set down roots have been called "invasions" An invasion does not have to mean armed troops attacking a country. It IS an invasion of sorts.

None of the solutions being discussed currently will solve the basic problem long term, which is caused by the fact that Mexico is horribly mismanaged. I proposed that the US take over the northern provinces, even temporarily and try to spread some of the prosperity that we have to Mexico. I doubt anyone will take me up on it, but it WOULD solve the problem.

And what exactly is Mexico going to do?
May 17, 2006 9:59AM PDT

Send an army to invade us?

Whoops! They already did.

It's time to start treating this invading country as an invading country.

Cut off all aid.

Shoot the invaders, shoot to kill.

Any captives should be placed in POW camps until Mexico is ready to stop sending people over here to break our laws, illegal entry being just one of them.

Maybe a little carpet bombing of their border cities would get them to realize that we mean business.

If Mexico complains, move the carpet bombing further south. After all, what are they complaining about? That we object to their people entering illegally and are asserting our right to protect our borders? How dare we.

I just don't happen to think that bombing Mexico is the answer to the problem. In fact it would probably make the problem worse since it would make conditions in Mexico even worse than they are now, and people would be scrambling across the border to escape the bombs.

Yes, my grandmother jumped ship and considering what she was trying to escape from, it's hard to blame her. Read up on the Pogroms sometime before you judge.

.....you don't consider this insulting at all:

to bad you rather roll over and talk spanish

I never said or suggested anything of the kind (though there's nothing wrong with learning some Spanish -- my 3 year old goes to a bilingual preschool and loves it). All I said is that killing people is not always the answer to a problem, Mark.
