Seeking a Start Menu Organiser

Oct 14, 2005 7:14AM PDT

Does anyway know of a nice preferably free utility for organising the Windows XP Start Menu Programs into categories and sub-categories - preferably using ones own classifications. I have been looking at Tidy Start Menu, the free version, and it meets part of my need, but I would have to purchase the ability to use my own classifications - and Im addicted to freeware!

The easiest and cheapest way I know (free)

is to just open up the Start Menu folder in Windows Explorer under your username in Documents and Settings....then create new folders for each category that you want with the names you prefer (such as Burner Types, Internet Types, etc) and then drag each program to that particular category folder. Once you have every arranged the way you want, close Windows Explorer, click your Start button, and you should find everything where you want it to be.

This worked pretty well in all previous versions of Windows as well.

I normally use the Classic desktop instead of the Luna one that XP defaults to when installed so my Start menu cascades out like it used to with W9X making it much easier to categorize to my own preferences rather than the grouping that XP does.

Thanks Toni - had long forgotten the Classic view of the Start Programs in my initial XP excitement. I think this gives me what I want.
