General discussion

security with DSL

Oct 3, 2007 7:26PM PDT

My wife works in an office that has 8 computers running through a router to a server. DSL was installed today and Im concerned about sensitive data on the server being compromised.

The DSL carrier is Qwest. Im not familiar with how DSL secures its broadband signal. Whereas Cable, I heard that anyone on my Node could sniff out packets of info being transmitted if they had the right software.

If I need to install software protection what would be a good solution.

Unfortunately when the installers were there, they set all the machines to "acquire IP address automatically" Which I dont want to change. Why? Because the sytem is working properly and I dont want to compromise that.

But, is there a way that I can still set encryption keys for wired connections using the Linksys wired router?

All of the machines are running XP pro.

Update the firmware for the Linksys router, you can get this from Linksys website, you need the model number

Broadcast SSID
Use WPA security, WEP can be hacked

Use nothing else.

You will be secure this way.

You do have virus protection on all the computers, correct?

Anyone checking their email, if it contains a virus, can spread the virus to files, folders and other computers.
