Security Update Available for Adobe Flash Player (APSB12-18)

Aug 14, 2012 4:31AM PDT
Release date: August 14, 2012

Vulnerability identifier: APSB12-18

Priority: See bulletin

CVE number: CVE-2012-1535

Platform: Windows, Macintosh and Linux

Summary:

Adobe has released security updates for Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.270 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh and Linux. These updates address a vulnerability (CVE-2012-1535) that could cause the application to crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.

There are reports that the vulnerability is being exploited in the wild in limited targeted attacks, distributed through a malicious Word document. The exploit targets the ActiveX version of Flash Player for Internet Explorer on Windows.

Adobe recommends users update their product installations to the latest versions:

• Users of Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.270 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh should update to Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.271.

• Users of Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.236 and earlier versions for Linux should update to Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.238.

• Flash Player installed with Google Chrome will be updated automatically, so no user action is required. Google Chrome users can verify that they have updated to Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.79.

Affected software versions:

• Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.270 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems

To verify the version of Adobe Flash Player installed on your system, access the About Flash Player page, or right-click on content running in Flash Player and select "About Adobe (or Macromedia) Flash Player" from the menu. If you use multiple browsers and did not select the option to 'Allow Adobe to install updates' (Windows and Macintosh only), perform the check for each browser you have installed on your system.

Note: Adobe Flash Player for Android is not affected by the vulnerability addressed in this update.

Solution:

Adobe recommends users update their software installations by following the instructions below:

• Adobe recommends users of Adobe Flash Player 11.3.300.270 and earlier versions for Windows and Macintosh should update to the newest version 11.3.300.271 by downloading it from the Adobe Flash Player Download Center. Users of Flash Player 11.2.x or later for Windows and Flash Player 11.3.x for Macintosh who have selected the option to 'Allow Adobe to install updates' will receive the update automatically. Windows and Macintosh users who do not have the 'Allow Adobe to install updates' option enabled can install the update via the update mechanism within the product when prompted.

• Flash Player installed with Google Chrome will be updated automatically, so no user action is required. Google Chrome users can verify that they have updated to Google Chrome version 21.0.1180.79.

• Adobe recommends users of Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.236 and earlier versions for Linux should update to Adobe Flash Player 11.2.202.238 by downloading it from the Adobe Flash Player Download Center.

Strange... No Problems Here...
Aug 17, 2012 3:39AM PDT

Using the update installer file only (AdbeRdrUpd1014.msp), I've installed the10.1.4 update on four computers so far, running Windows XP SP3 and Windows 7, both Pro and Home versions, and it installed normally in all of those situations.. It took a minute or two to install on all machines..

Miki, just curious, but what type of computer did you use? Did you use the update file I mentioned earlier? Anything else unusual about the system?

Hope this helps.

Hi Grif
Aug 18, 2012 8:43AM PDT

I have a Dell Studio XPS 8100, Windows 7, IE 9 computer. I did the install shortly after finishing installing the current Windows Updates, for which I did restarts. I downloaded from the Adobe Download Center, which I believe is the link you mention, being careful not to include Google Toolbar and Chrome.. Because of the lengthy install time, I began to think these two programs were also being installed, but I did not see either on my computer when install finished.. My computer is running fast and does not appear to have a problem.

The Adobe Reader X 10.1.4 appears correctly in Programs and Features. Do you suggest I uninstall and reinstall again?

A Different Approach
Aug 19, 2012 2:42AM PDT

Adobe has now release the "full" installer for Reader 10.1.4. The link is below.. After download the full installer file to your desktop, uninstall the previous version from your computer, then install the new.

Note: Clicking on the link below will immediately open the download dialogue window.. (If the ftp site doesn't open in Firefox, it should work fine in Internet Explorer. )
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.1.4/en_US/AdbeRdr1014_en_US.exe

Hope this helps.

Done! Installed 10.1.4 from your direct link in the flash of an eye.

As far back as I can remember, installing Adobe Reader has been my nemesis.

Four questions:

1. Do you suggest I download all future updates for Adobe Reader from the ftp site?
2. Was my original download from Adobe Downloads on their website (without Google Toolbar and Chrome) not just the full installer?
3. Do you suggest uninstalling old Adobe Reader versions before installing new? (I used to do that)
4. Do you ride a white horse ? Happy

Well....

1. Do you suggest I download all future updates for Adobe Reader from the ftp site?

I do, but it DOES change slightly each time, depending on the name of the file. I tend to download the Adobe Reader Update file from the link below or something similar to it which isn't ftp.. As stated earlier, it changes with the name of the file.. It's what I used to update the 10.1.3 version, I didn't use the website directly.

http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/10.1.4/misc/AdbeRdrUpd1014.msp

Likewise, you can download the "full" installer, usually a few days AFTER the update is released at the ftp site below:

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/10.x/

2. Was my original download from Adobe Downloads on their website (without Google Toolbar and Chrome) not just the full installer?

As stated above, you're correct. The Adobe Downloads site simply updates your current version from their downloadable installer.. Maybe it's just personal, but I've always had better luck with the downloadable installer versus the online installer.

3. Do you suggest uninstalling old Adobe Reader versions before installing new? (I used to do that)

When I use the update installer (the .msp file link above), I don't uninstall the previous version.. The "update" installer requires the previous version to be installed. When I install the "full" version from the ftp site, I DO uninstall the previous version.

4. Do you ride a white horse ?

Nope, although I have many times.. My latest horse, (yes, we used to own horses), was a sorrel, but he passed on to greener pastures a few years ago.

Hope this helps.

Appreciate your time and patience with me

Grif -- I understand what you are saying.....but being me, you will probably see me here again on the subject.....just to make sure.....or looking for reassurance.. I did use the ftp site many times, but for some reason switched to Adobe Downloads.

Sometime ago, there was a photo album being shown of Cnet mods and posters, and there was a photo of you on a horse.....from what I remember of the color, he looked like a sorrel.

My thanks again.....Miki
