Security settings causing a big headache

Dec 2, 2003 11:22AM PST

W2K OS

When trying to move files (drag or C/P) I get a box entitled "Security Alert" and the message is "Your current security settings prohibit copying or moving files from this zone." It happens on desk top and Explore. Very recent. The only thing I have installed lately, other than updates to Ad-aware, AVG, etc., is PivX Qwik-Fix.

If it helps any the icon on the box next to the message is a lock w/key and a yellow triangle with a ! in the middle of it.

Anyone have any idea what type of Security Setting this alert is talking about?

Rosalie,

could it be Qwik-Fix?? Give it a try - click on the icon > disable Qwik-Fix - does it now work?? If yes, you can enable Qwik-Fix again after you are done.

Disabled and even uninstalled and it didn't help. However ....

I'm wondering if Qwik-Fix was not to blame for this problem? Is that possible? I think it started after installing Qwik-Fix. At any rate now that it's fixed (see my last post below) I don't think I want to reinstall Qwik-Fix Sad

Rosalie,

as you disabled Qwik-Fix - everything had to be "normal" again and NO problems. If you THINK your problems are related to Qwik-Fix - I would write to:

and let them know the problems you "think" are caused by Qwik-Fix. They should know about it!

Rosalie,

Thank you for helping us test Qwik-Fix, your feedback is valuable to our
efforts.

The security zone setting in question was unintentionally disabled,
which affected not only Internet Explorer but Windows Explorer. We have
corrected this behavior and will release an updated revision of Qwik-Fix
0.57 during the day.

Uninstalling or disabling Qwik-Fix does revert your settings to their
original state, however Windows may not always apply those changes until
you have either logged out or rebooted. We are working on finding ways
to programmatically refresh the setting cache of Windows so that any
changes to your settings will have affect immediately.

Rosalie, Another Thing To Check...
Dec 2, 2003 11:50AM PST

If Marianna's suggestion doesn't fix the issue, then, click Start-Settings-Control Panel, then double click on the "Internet Options" icon. When that opens, click on the "Security" tab, then click on the "Internet" icon (the world globe), then click on the "Custom Level" button. When that loads, (and I'm currently using Internet Explorer 6), scroll down to the "Miscellaneous" section and make sure that there is dot/tick in the "Drag and drop or copy and paste files" selection. If you've made any changes, click on OK, and choose "Yes" when it asks you "Are you sure?". Then scroll down to the "Scripting" section and "Enable" the selection titled: "Enable paste operations via script". Once again, click on OK, etc.

Hope this helps.

Back in business! Yahooooo...
Dec 2, 2003 1:04PM PST

Man I never jumped through so many hoops before in my life but it worked! The last settings, concerning downloading files and allowing drag and drop, were already ticked so it must have been the first part that did the actual trick.

I'm so glad this is fixed! Sure would like to know how this happened because I for sure didn't go through all those steps, discribed by the first article, to enable this security.

Thank you, Ed.

No problem Rosalie and glad to hear that you are a happy camper again.

Are you by chance on a network where someone else may have made the policy change? Another thing that might have happened is that someone somehow got you to run a .reg file that "did the deed".

Not on a network, and no one touches my PC unless they are tired of living.

Qwik-Fix does alter the registry and I'm almost sure that was the culprit especially since hearing back from them. See my reply to Marianne.
