Thor Larholm, a senior security researcher at PivX Solutions, has proposed a plan to create a trade association for vulnerability researchers. The organization would protect the legal and economic interests of its members, bring researchers together, communicate with vendors, perform third-party research reviews, and lobby Washington for the general interests of vulnerability researchers. The plan is still in initial stages, but so far Mr. Larholm has had almost unanimous support from the researchers and software executives he has talked to about the plan. Members would be both professional researchers and free-lancers; keeping malicious hackers from joining the organization to get access to vulnerability data is one challenge facing the plan. Proper disclosure of vulnerabilities also promises to be a contentious issue. Mr. Larholm sees the establishment of such a trade group as only a matter of time, and a benefit both for researchers and the security industry as a whole.
