IE even when "patched up" still can be hijacked.

Most spyware can't invade if you use Mozilla or Firefox. Try those.

When I open a new IE window, two windows open up. One is the window I wanted, the other is something like "randomsites" or "oldgames" or some site offering sex.
I had neglected to update Windows (I am running XP home edition) for a long time, and have since made the update. But whatever it is that causes this annoying problem is still on my computer.
Any suggestion would be appreciated.
