Question

security certificate is invalid

Sep 4, 2018 12:57PM PDT

Thousands of security alerts keep popping up on my computer... It says its due to a website but I had no websites open over the weekend when this happened. The only programs that I had open were Photoshop CC, After Effects CC, Premiere Pro CC, and the Creative Cloud App updater... I ran windows defender to see if something popped up on that but got nothing. What do? This has happened before but instead of looking into it I just spam clicked them all away with the "no" option and all was good..

edit: Forgot to mention when I click "View Certificate" nothing shows up..

Answer
So many reasons for this.

Let's cover two but lead with clicking no was IMO the right choice.

Any cloud app could have this happen. Causes? Your date and time might be off or the site certs expired and they renewed them.

hmm

The date and time is correct on this computer. My home computer is off by 2 hours and it never has these pop ups on it... The pop up windows refuse to show the certificate.. they just close when I click on "view certificate", is there another way to see what is causing this to happen?

The 2 hours could be enough.

Why not fix that?

Also, you may not be able to fix it as certificates can expire yearly and some sites don't worry about it until there are trouble reports.

I meant that

the pop ups are all happening on my work computer that has the correct time and date. My home computer is off by two hours and has never had this problem.
I think this is the fourth or so time in the past two weeks it has happened.. I've never seen a pop up while I'm sitting at my desk.. but when I leave for the day and come back the following morning its pop up galore. I don't know how to pin point the issue.

I did go into my date and time and switch it from custom to automatic so maybe that will fix it even though its the same?

That helps a little.

Many WORK computers are using another way of getting updates. Part of the Windows updates can be certificates so if this is on a work computer you let their IT deal with it. They set it up so they get the trouble reports and how to handle it.

I think you did the right thing by clicking no. If you view the cert, you are getting into the IT work where you get the cert, compare it wth the cert the company of the software product or site, WHICH IS what IT staffers do. For us, the users we just click No.

As to date and time, usually automatic is fine if your timezone is correct. Now it is possible, say with Windows 7 and updates disabled you could have incorrect timezone information but I rarely run into that. The usual is check the timezone and maybe, just maybe change time servers.

For W10 this is how: https://www.windowscentral.com/how-manage-time-servers-windows-10
