Question

Security camera for riding arena

Mar 28, 2018 3:32PM PDT

I ride my horse in an arena that is not visible from our house. It is about 400 feet away up a hill. I'd like for my husband to be able to check on me via a camera so that he would know if I fall and can't move due to injury, which happened 2 years ago. We could use a smartphone or some other device to view. Something either battery or solar powered would be best since I'm not sure we can get power there. The system does not need to record video. It only needs to display video while I'm there, which is normally no more than 1 hour. It would need to be an outdoor unit with a wide angle. I saw a pet monitor system by Motorola (Scout) that had everything I wanted, but it requires electricity. I do NOT want it to be motion sensitive since the lack of motion is the issue! Does anyone have a suggestion for a setup that would work? Many thanks, Stacey

Answer
At 400 feet we are over double what I suggest for WiFi

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivuu gets you into so many "turn your phone into a security camera" apps that you can ignore motion detection and more. Just rig up a spot for your phone to be that covers your arena and then many allow you to feed a view on a PC.

Most phones can do this for hours.

But, I would be remiss if I didn't call out that some activities are never done alone. When I have to go up on a ladder for more than say a few feet I always get help during my work since just like you, there could be an accident. If your family won't watch for you during this time I think it's time for a talk.

Thank you so much for this information. I installed Alfred on an old phone, but now I need to find a way to extend the wifi since it doesn't reach that far.
