Secure Digital card speed when recording Video

Oct 9, 2004 6:10PM PDT

I am looking into purchasing a new digi Cam with Video/audio capability. However my question is with the flash memory cards.

I have noticed recently new SD cards with speed ratings of 45X , 60X and higher. Does the speed of the Flash memory card play any role when recording video with sound in the camera, or is the memory speed simply only utilized when using a card reader.

Tnx

Such "X" speeds are comparison to the 1X speed of the CD PLAYERS. Great marketing idea but in short, there is a stock speed of SD cards and if your camera has this feature, then the speed is sufficient.

Best of luck,

Bob

I recently saw the specifications for a new Sony digital camera that stated that the high speed PRO memory stick was required to achieve the advertised movie speed length of recording. I don't recall the particular model of camera.

This is probably the start of things to come.

With camera makers stretching the ability of the newer cameras, they will probably turn to faster media to improve their specifications.

When they resort to such techniques, they have to put the requirement for high speed media in their documentation.

So if it is not in your owners manual, you don't need it to meet the manufacturers specifications.
