Secondary monitor not powering on after computer wake up

by whearts / September 2, 2013 6:52 PM PDT

In the last month or so the second monitor has taken longer and longer to power back on. Usually uninstalling the ATI Catalyst and reboot will activate the monitor again. The desktop is active. Windows that open on it can be drug to the main window.

Currently I don't have Catalyst installed and plugging the monitor back in after a reboot and detecting it isn't working.

What is the DOS command to force Windows to rewake all devices?

Its getting rather annoying spending an hour or two a day trying to get it to work.

Here is the dxdiag info in case its useful.

Re: monitor

The most likely assumptions for me is that it is an issue with the video card. So I'd start with trying another one.

More unlikely possibilities:
- it's a monitor issue (but it's easier to try another monitor than another video card)
- it's a driver issue (but it's not difficult to install the latest driver and ATI-software)
- it's a Windows issue (and it's a lot of work to go back to factory conditions)

Onboard video

In reply to: Re: monitor

As with many store bought computers the video card is part of the motherboard, so I don't have the option to purchase the latest card.

The monitor works fine when the computer bothers to send it input. I'll go pull an old CRT out of the closet just to give us peace of mind on this issue.

The drivers I'm being told are the latest for the Radeon 3000 are dated 2013/01/21 version 13.1 The executable is named 13-1-legacy_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc if it matters.

I am almost positive its a windows 7 issue, however I've been unable to find the solution thus far.

Unless it's a laptop, it's much easier and much cheaper to add a videocard (no need for it to be hottest, latest and most expensive!) then to replace the motherboard. It seems an ATI 5450 is a good basic card with a low power consumption, so most likely there is no need to change the PSU also.

If you think it's a Windows issue, and system restore back to before the issues began doesn't help, a clean install of Windows might be necessary. But as I said, that's a lot of work. If you have the disks, you can consider to do it on a new hard disk, so that - if it doesn't work - the old disk still has all your programs and data.

In reply to: Re: video

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The monitor is blinking and ready to go. All it needs is input from the computer which its not getting. Again, applications that I have set to open on te second monitor open and can be drug to the main window just fine.

I should mention at this point I've reinstalled the Catalyst 13.1 drivers and display software dated 1/21/2013.

Now to clarify, my secondary monitor I a Syncmaster LCD. Its getting nothing when I drag folders to and from its desktop. Its desktop is showing black.

Dusty CRT #1 was a Dell. When I ran the hardware iagnostic tools it displayed the diagnostic backgrounds just fine. I should say instead of a fancy picture background it had just a white desktop. Folders drug to an from did not show. An internet explorer window displaying the yahoo front page showed until I released the tab. If I drug it by the edges / top bar it didn't show. If I drug t by the tab it did show until it was released.

Dusty CRT #2 was a Syncmaster CRT. As above it showed a white desktop, worked in the hardware diagnostics, didn't display windows folders, did display internet explorer by the tab until released.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I'm not the one mentioning it. That was MikeGeek below. But it certainly is some hardware component.

But if other monitors misbehave also, it's unlike to be a monitor issue, I think. That leaves you a nice choice:

- if you think it's Windows (a) you try if it works in Ubuntu (but I really can't tell if it supports dual monitors and how to activate that) or (b) you reinstall Windows (clean install) or (c) you install Windows on another hard disk or partition as an experiment.
- If you think it's hardware you try a separate video card.

It's quite likely that a new Windows with a new video card will work correctly. It's even quite likely that one of the two suffices.

Replacing Video card, installing new OS
by whearts / September 2, 2013 11:27 PM PDT

On the motherboard video. Replacing Hewlett Packard proprietary hardware is not an option.

Installing Linux Ubuntu for the fun of it is not going to happen.

Reinstalling windows. I'll have to look through the box later, but I don't recall seeing a Windows 7 DVD. Pretty sure it was just OEM.

Re: installing Windows
by Kees_B Forum moderator / September 3, 2013 12:21 AM PDT

A few remarks.
1. I'm sure HP can replace the motherboard if it's defective.
2. Ubuntu (like most, if not all, versions of Linux) can be run off a CD/DVD without installing it on the hard disk
3. OEM machines (like Compaq or Dell, no experience with HP) used to come with a Windows install disk and a driver/utilities disk (and a MS Works disk, and whatevere more was included) for the occasional reinstall. But gradually that is being eplaced by a recovery partition on the hard disk to go back to factory conditions. And quite often, they invite you to make recovery disks yourself so you can even go back to factory conditions on a new hard disk.

That's something in the monitor?
by Kees_B Forum moderator / September 2, 2013 9:07 PM PDT

In that case the OP's experiment with his old CRT should give a positive result. The nice thing: it's even easier to replace the monitor (if repair is impossible or too expenisive) than adding a video card.

I had this happen with a few displays, of the older VGA type and the newer widescreen LCD displays and if you reset the power on the monitor is returned to life. In effect, reboot the monitor.

Being over-driven
by Willy / September 3, 2013 4:29 AM PDT

How is this connected, if you're using the video port? There are 2-video ports, but one is supposed to be used. In other words it gave the option of one or the other. What you in effect have used both and are now "over-driving" it's use its finally starting to buckle. Since, this is on the mtrbd. you need to get a better video card which will replace the on-board video. Sooner or later the on-board will fail or become such an issue it won't recover. Plus, you have a 250W PSU which could be also starting or is the actual problem because it has to drive video for 2-ports. Even though this has worked, I just see a problem to becoming a failure.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
