Secondary IDE Disabled?

May 24, 2005 4:30PM PDT

Hi,I'm new to computers. I have a used Compaq Presario 5441 Desktop PC,factory-installed Windows 98. I recently, installed the Full-version Windows 98 Second Edition which,i still have. How do i re-enable my Secondary IDE Controller(dual fifo)hdc? When i clicked on "Problem Devices"under "Components" in the "System Information" tree that i expanded under"Microsoft System Information" window or box,a message appeared stating the following, for my Secondary ID Controller:
>>>This device has a problem,code=29(0x1D). This device has been disabled in the hardware. In order to use this device, you must re-enable the hardware.<<<< End of message. I have looked under "Device Manager" in "System Properties" and clicked on the "Hard Disk Controllers" section, under "View devices by type" and noticed I have five differrent types of ID controllers.
Do i need 5 IDE controllers? Here are the following 5 types:Compaq PCI IDE, Secondary IDE, SIS 5513 Dual PCI IDE,and two Primary IDE controllers. How do we correct this problem? Step by step please. In advance,Thank you for any suggestions. Bluewaters out

and in device manager, click the plus marks in front of all hardware categories, except SYSTEM at the very bottom. Now look for any duplicate or multiple entries for each category (such as two cdroms when you only have one, two floppy drives, three keyboards, etc.) For every category you find duplicate or multiple entries under, right click and remove ALL of the entries that are multiples, including the original (if you have three floppy drives listed take out all three not just the two extra ones).

You won't be able to remove the Primary and Secondary IDE controllers, considered to be 'child' devices....you will have to remove the Parent of them instead; such as the two you have showing PCI IDE controller as the 'child' devices under it are protected by windows.

Once you have cleaned up all the categories, reboot the computer and windows will locate the drivers from your registry and windows\system folders for them again and will reinstall the correct drivers only once.

If you go back to Device Mgr, and if the yellow marks are still there, do this. Right click the Parent IDE controller, choose Properties, and in the drop down arrow change it from 'default' to 'enable both'...

Then go to RUN type REGEDIT and once in the registry do the following:

click Edit, click Find, type NOIDE and click Find Now. When the entry shows up on the right hand side, right click that entry and choose Delete. Click EDIT again, click Find, typeBADIDE and click FIND NOW. If BADIDE shows in the right pane, right click on it and delete it too. Close the Registry.

(for W98 and ME) Now go to RUN again, type MSCONFIG, and look at the autoexec.bat and config.sys tabs....any statement line that shows a reference to the cdrom and DOES NOT say REM at the beginning of the line should be unchecked. Close MSCONFIG and reboot the computer.
