Second monitor on lap- question on screens

Jul 29, 2004 12:53AM PDT

Hello. I just bought a 19" LCD monitor to use with my laptop. My laptop has a screen that is going bad (reddish on bottom and middle). The 2nd monitor picks up some of the reddish hues in the middle (but not the bottom). Is it possible for my bad screen to "infect" the new monitor or is it just picking up the hues because it "sees" it. I am buying a new laptop this week. Thanks so much

Sounds more like the video chipset is going bad on the old laptop, not the display. A defect in one monitor will not be replicated in another, for that to happen it has to be at the source.

I agree this sounds like a video chipset issue. The only good news is the LCD of a laptop on the spare parts market is worth a few hundred.

But here's my KILLER TEST to find out if it's the display, or display video chips. HINT! Use Google to find the items in all-capitals.

TIGHTVNC would be installed and I would look at the laptop screen across a network. This removes the video displays and chips out of the loop and tells us if the laptop display is likely not the bum part.
