Question

second HD does not show in win explorer

Dec 11, 2014 3:38AM PST

Hi,

1. I backed up my Seagate win8 "C" partition, using Paragon, in the spare Maxtor HD & it used 61.9GB, the rest 50gb are free space.

As Win8 was installed in "C" I presumed that The Maxtor if installed alone in the PC it would boot up but, it does not. Should't it?

2. The other thing is that when I boot the PC in w8 both HDs show up in the Setup but, the Maxtor does not show up in the w8 win explorer.

If I boot up in the dual boot XP they both show up in the XP win explorer. ....thanx ....nick Confused

Answer
Tell in detail what you did in step 1.

But if I wanted to do this I'd clone the boot drive. We can't backup "C" (the partition) and get a working Windows. There's more to it than that.

Thanx, point taken.

1. Unfortunately my spare HD Maxtor has only 160GB & that is why I could only try if a clone works on C only.

Is there a way to create a clone File & keep it in the external HD in case needed?

2. The Compaq laptop HD is only 90GB, can this be cloned on that spare 160gb Maxtor HD in aPC?
In the link you gave what do they mean by "System"? .....thanx .....nick

So they are not telling?

There are many youtube videos about PCs, operating systems and more. Your question, while fine is bordering on asking how does Windows work and more. I can't fit that here.

As to cloning to a smaller drive, the video appears to note it can resize along the way. If you have too much on some other drive you can move that off to your other backups before the clone.

Q. "Is there a way to create a clone File & keep it in the external HD in case needed?"
A. "Yes."
But you won't be able to boot from it since Windows doesn't support such a boot.

2. The Compaq laptop HD is only 90GB, can this be cloned on that spare 160gb Maxtor HD in aPC?
I don't see why not.

OK but can you connect a new HD on the laptop to clone to like in a PC?

You can put that new disk in an external enclosure, connect it to USB (2 or 3) port and clone the internal disk to it.

But since you already have a copy of c-partition on another disk, that doesn't boot, did you try Windows startup repair to fix it? Might work.

where is Windows startup repair kept or do you mean to insert my w8 cd & repair?

No. Simply no. READ CAREFULLY.

Windows, even Windows 8 in its stock forms that 99.99% of us get can not boot from USB. To boot this clone I'd have to move it to the connection that the clone came from.

Answer
how are you booting to it?
Dec 13, 2014 5:50AM PST

doing it from the BIOS, or from a bootloader? If the first hard drive then windows will/should see it as C drive. If from a boot loader, but isn't the boot drive, it won't see it as the C drive.
