Searchand Destroy

Mar 19, 2005 11:42AM PST

I have tried several times to download Search and Destroy. It always tells me it (spybotsd13.exe) already exists, do I want to replace it. I say yes BECAUSE I can't find it on my computer. I used Find to see if I could locate it; that tells me it's in C:\Program Files. I looked through every folder at every file to see if it might be in the wrong folder but I couldn't find it.

Does this mean: it didn't really download? I'm not supposed to see it? (but then how do I use it?) What does this mean and how do I get (or do I get) Search and Destroy?

When you use Find

to find the file, does it list the file?

If so, then that is it. Highlight it, right click it, and choose Open, or highlight it and double click it. That should start the installation process for the full Spybot (Search & Destroy) program.

When the program is installed and you open it for the first time, don't forget to check for updates immediately, then Immunise, before scanning your computer for any spyware

When you use Find

Thank you, Mark. Again!

I followed your instructions then scanned with S&D. Now I have a couple of questions you will probably be able to answer for me because you use S&D (and because you're so smart). The tutorial says to follow the link to read what the red entries are. I'm not sure how to do that. The other thing is one of the red entries was from the registry and I'm not sure if it's something I should remove. This is it: DSO Exploit; HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004=W=3; Registry change. There is an icon that looks like a falling block of parts on the end. Can you tell me from the information I've provided whether this is something I should remove? I just thought of another question: If I remove things will they be held in the recycle bin or immediately deleted?

Another question: How do you find so much time to help other people with their problems? I can tell you are a very smart person but this takes a lot of time. I can't tell you how much it is appreciated. Thank you.

Sorry I didn't recognise your user name in my first post.

No, I'm not that smart, Happy

When I checked my own Spybot tutorial I couldn't find a link specifically about red entries, although there are plenty of links, underlined, dotted throughout the help pages. Are you saying that when you click a link, (when the mouse pointer changes to a pointing finger), that nothing happens?

Apparently this version of Spybot shows what is called a "False Positive" of DSO exploits. DSO exploits are bad and as they are shown as red entries in the Spbot scan results window, they should be deleted. But the next time you run Spybot, they may turn up again. The false positives don't do any harm.

Roddy, over in the Virus & Security Alerts forum knows more about this than me.

Generally I would allow Spybot to delete anything it finds which is red. But look at each entry, and if it is something you recognise, then come and ask in the Virus forum.

When Spybot removes spyware, it creates a backup. Check the Recovery icon in the list on the left. The entries there will remain until you delete them for good. Or you can recover individual entries. They don't turn up in the Recycle Bin.

Regards your last question, some might say I have too much time on my hands, or I should get out more, Happy

Best wishes.

Mark
