Search and "find target" don't work

May 15, 2005 2:45AM PDT

I have Windows 2k SP4. When I click on find from the start button, nothing happens. I have to open My Computer and click the search button to search. This isn't such a problem, but also when I click on "find target" in the properties of a shortcut, nothing happens. I'm hoping that this is just along the lines of me disabling something that I shouldn't have.

Try this old fix.

Install TWEAKUI and see if the SHOW SEARCH ON DESKTOP is unchecked. If so, CHECK IT.

Thanks Bob. I installed tweakui but I don't see SHOW SEARCH ON DESKTOP anywhere. What tab is it in?

Not on my 2000 box at the moment, but..

Here's my note about search and TWEAKUI.

1) Do *not* change the first icon from "My Documents" on the Desktop tab
2) Do *not* uncheck: Search Results on the Desktop tab
3) Do *not* hide the Tweak UI icon on the Control Panel tab
4) Do *not* uncheck: Show Control Panel on Start Menu on the IE tab
5) Do *not* uncheck: Shell enhancements on the IE tab

its not there

I don't see Search Results on the Desktop tab. "Find target" is all I really care about but I'm assuming the two are related.

fixed (sort of)

Hey thanks for that link. The find target doesn't actually work, but now I have one directly in the right-click menu, which is even better!

Once you think the system is somewhat stable try IEFIX.

SP4 cd needed
May 18, 2005 7:49AM PDT

I tried that IE Fix, but it asked for the SP4 cd. I installed SP4 from the internet. Suggestions?
