Seagate FreeAgent Desktop HD

Sep 2, 2007 1:46PM PDT

Is this a good company to go with? There were so many options at the store I had no idea what to get. They suggested trying this product, but I've been reading some mixed reviews... I'm not sure if this is the same with all hard drives or not.

I've always used CDs for backups, had an external hard drive once and it would not work so I had to return it... So I'm kind of new to this and not real advanced with computers eithers.

Thanks

RE: External HDDs (Seagate as well as others)
Sep 2, 2007 3:20PM PDT

If the external is used as a backup and the original files are stored at least at one other place, it would be passable. Many users fill up their internal HDDs and add externals to hold what doesn't fit on the internal HDD. Result...most of the users data ends up on an external HDD which at some point they can't access temporarily or even worse, permanently.

But before going too much further...please take a look thru the STORAGE FORUM posts particularly the ones on EXTERNAL HDDs. Again treated with care and caution...it could suffice. But if you're looking for something more stable and reliable...I'd focus on CDs, DVDs or Dual Layer DVDs for things you don't want to lose or spend your hard-earned dollars on data recovery.

Any questions...drop us note.

Thanks, I will take a look

I still plan to do a backup to CD once and a while, probably 2 times a month. I would just like to have something that I can have a more regular backup on. I tend to forget about, or don't have the time and skip doing backups to CD. So I was hoping to get something that would either be faster or allow me to have it do backup automatically.

thanks for your help!

If you read thru thru STORAGE FORUM re BACKUP...I guarantee
Sep 2, 2007 4:26PM PDT

you'll find something that piques your interest and matches your need. Some backup solutions may include external HDDs ...mine does and for me it's actually a 3rd copy (an image file) of my C: drive (OS and ALL APPs) and D: drive (my data, downloads, etc., also an image file) which could be restored en masse in minutes should either of my internal hard drives die. I also have another program called NovaBackup that I use to backup selected drives, partitions, folders, etc., etc.,.

After reading so many messages in the STORAGE FORUM about external HDDs that aren't recognized by the systems they're connected to (or others)...it's real difficult to recommend them as a primary backup .. impossible to recommend as primary storage. Yet everyday ... I read where someone who has all their data on an external HDD where their PC doesn't recognize it or they can't access it. Enough for now.

Any questions . . we'll be here.
