Question

Seagate 1200.2 SSD for home computer?

Jul 31, 2017 9:36PM PDT

I have a chance to buy a Seagate 1200.2 SSD for cheap. I know it's an enterprise SSD, but can I use it for a home computer? If so, what are some of the "gotchas" I need to think about before purchasing?

I will be buying/building the desktop around this SSD, so I do have some flexibility.

Should be fine.

I've used about every class of HDD and SSD over the decades. Should be no different than a "home" model.

It's a SAS not a SATA HD

Turns out the Seagate 1200.2 is a SAS SSD. So I need a SAS motherboard instead of a SATA. From my research it sounds like I cannot plug a SAS HD into a SATA motherboard.

I knew the deal was to good to be true.

Sas

You are correct, it will not be a straight plug in.
You will need some sort of converter to go from a sata mobo to a sas disk.

Keep in mind that nand has a limited write endurance so if this ssd came out of a server it might have seen quite a lot of wear.

If you can get it cheap and the converter is cheap go for it.

If it does not work out your not out much.
