General discussion

SD400 or SD500

Feb 21, 2005 3:22AM PST

Between the two, which camera should I get? yes the 500 has 7.1 megapixels, but is that even necessary. It has a few more shooting options and scene settings, but I don't know if it will make a difference. Any suggestions?

How big do you want your photos to print?
Feb 21, 2005 8:32AM PST

That pretty much determines how many pixels you need.

IMO, it's always best to get the best camera you can afford, but that assumes you are serious about photography. If you want snaps for the web, you don't need a 7megapixel camera.

resolution wise

(personal opinion)
well the main difference between the two is the resolution. frankly if it was me, i would go with the 400 (thats the one im buying) now personally i dont plan on making anything bigger than an 11x14, but if you want to go bigger, youll need more resolution. for the majority of people, the sd400 would suffice, save yourself the money, buy an extended warrantee, or upgrade your memory card or something.

Does anybody know when the SD 500 will actually be released?

Other advantages of resolution
Feb 24, 2005 2:34AM PST

One important point to consider besides what size print you want to print is the functionality of a digital zoom or cropping. I personally would rather have all the resolution I can get if I want to get that image I just can't reach with my optical zoom.

I also believe that the detail in shadow areas is much better with higher resolution.

My 2 cents

If you SCUBA dive or Snorkle... get the SD500
Mar 2, 2005 1:31AM PST

I'm a diver so I care about these things, but keep in mind, the case on the SD400 only goes to 9.8 ft... I snorkle three to four times deeper than that! The case on the SD500 goes to 130 ft. which handles all but the most technical dives. Granted the SD500 has a slightly larger body size...

Price Drop
Mar 6, 2005 6:44AM PST

With the new SD500 being released, does that mean the previous/lower models will have a price drop? When would we expect the price drop to occur?
