SD Memory Card; how many pics can 256mb hold

Jun 3, 2005 2:00AM PDT

The canon elura 70 comes with 8mb sd memory card. If I'm reading correctly this is to store still photos.
How many pics does this actually hold?
How many pics can a 256mb card hold?
Can it be erased/reused after the pics are transferred to computer?
Thanks for any feedback.

SD Memory Card; how many pics can 256mb hold
Jun 3, 2005 3:28AM PDT

Yes, it can be reused!
How many pics it holds depends on how big a file each pic is. The higher quality the pic the bigger file. Look a the book that came with your camera and see what it uses and then do the math. John

Don't have the book yet...

Let's say I take each pic at the highest possible quality (whatever that may be for the elura 70), does anyone know how many will fit on the included 8mb card? If at least 40 will fit, then I won't need to purchase an extra card.

I am a novice and so don't know what size pics can be taken. Thanks again.

If you can't do the math, buy a card. Let's put it this way,

8 megabytes is not going to store many pictures no matter how small they are. You need a card. My camera would be lucky to get one picture on an 8 meg card. Cards are cheap. Get at least 256 megs.

Need #s to do the math

If I knew what size one pic is, I could do the math. Indera's very helpful response in this thread does just that--the size of pics in various resolutions is laid out clearly.

photo size

hi dheath,

i just looked in a folder of photos.
there are 37 high resolution photos in the folder and collective they take up 50.2 mb of space.
i sorted them by size and the smallest file size is 1.07 mb and the largest is 1.51 mb.

now you see why i bought a 512mb card. you could easily fill up a 256 mb card in no time (smile)

i hope this helps you more.

approx file sizes of digital photos

hi dheath,

i am no camera expert, but the answer to your question about how many pictures can a card hold is it depends on the quality of photos that you will take.

i copied this from the specs of a digital camera.

? 3072 x 2048 JPEG Fine: 3.1 MB
? 3072 x 2048 JPEG Normal: 1.8 MB
? 2048 x 1360 JPEG Fine: 1.8 MB
? 2048 x 1360 JPEG Normal: 1.2 MB
? 1536 x 1024 JPEG Fine: 1.4 MB
? 1536 x 1024 JPEG Normal: 0.9 MB
? 3072 x 2048 RAW: 6.0 MB

I take all photos in ''fine'' mode, which is the highest resolution, so I use a lot of space per picture. Most of my photos are around 1.8 mb each.

To be honest, I've never counted how many fit on a card. I bought 2 512 mb cards from ecost.com, because after rebates a while ago (december or november), they were $20 each.

I know that on xmas eve and xmas day I took over 175 pictures and they all fit on one 512 mb card.

If you also play to take video clips, a 256 mb card probably won't last you very long. That's why I bought 2 cards (smile).

Yes, you can delete the pictures once you have copied them to your computer or some other device. I keep mine on an external hard drive because I have a laptop and only have a 60 gb hard drive.

I hope this helps.

I hope you enjoy your elura 70. About a month ago, I purchased the optura 60. I put the sd card in, but have yet to take any pictures - LOL, only video.

how many cards?
Jun 7, 2005 4:28PM PDT

dheath,

i'm starting to think that many people outgrow a 256 mb card quicker than they think they will (smile).

i really want to try the continuous photo feature on my camcorder, where it takes 3or 5 photos one right after the other.

i also want to try the feature that takes one picture in 3 modes, under exposed, over exposed and something else at the same time.

to me, both of these options would quickly fill up a card much quicker.

enjoy your camcorder.
