Question

Screen static

Feb 4, 2015 12:54AM PST

I have an HP laptop with Windows 8 and something has gone wrong with the screen. It was doing an update so I set it down to let it finish and when I came back there is nothing but a bunch of lines and static. So bad so that you can't do anything on it the main start up screen where it has HP just before it comes on doesn't have the static but the screen was once blue now it is red. Any ideas as to what could be wrong? If it isn't a responsibly priced repair and I would need a new laptop...is there anyway to get all my "stuff" (pictures, music, etc. ) off this one? Thanks for any help or advice

As to getting your files out.

I continue to find USB HDD cases to be very nice to get this done. I put the laptop HDD into a drive case and fish out the files. Figure under 30 for a nice case.

What I wonder about is the model number and was the place it set down soft as in would the vents get blocked.

Try safe mode

If the screens OK, it could be some MS driver update that messed up the display. If so, you can try system restore from safe mode. Otherwise, I'd search for the display driver for that laptop. Make sure it's not from MS but from the manufacturer. Download and install it from safe mode if things work OK there.

I tried to boot in safe mode the screen still goes haywire. I tried connecting the laptop to our desktop monitor and it pulls up my computers home screen but when I try to click on anything, nothing will open
