Screen Saver worked and now it doesn't after monitor change

by Skyflyer_Design / June 5, 2008 1:58 PM PDT

Hello all.
I am running XP Pro (SP3).
I have spent some time looking at the posts for screen savers. There is a lot, but I didn't find anything related to my problem. Might have missed it.
Anyway ...
My screen saver WAS working just fine. I got another (used) 19" monitor and installed it. XP loaded the monitor up OK and it works fine, but the screen savers will not.
I can set the screen saver up and the preview works just fine. But it will not start up at the set time (1 minute or more). I have tried at least 5 or 6 of the XP screen savers and they all work in preview, but not on a schedule.
I can go to C:\Windows\System32\ss???.scr and double click and they work fine.
I have poked around in the Register and looked at some stuff suggested by Kellys-Korner (great site!). Not sure what to look for or change.

I have checked my Scheduled tasks. That works fine. I have 3 or 4 apps that run daily (Spybot, One-Click Maint, etc.)
So, the scheduling thing works.
My Power settings do NOT work. Turn off monitor or system standby do not appear to work. I did not try the turn off disk setting.

Would appreciate any comments on this.
What I might look for, check, or change to test this out.
I just hope that stupidity is not at the bottom of all this!!!
Thanks in advance ...
Bob

Another account seems to work just fine. The SS came on when scheduled.
So, something messed up on my regular account.
Don't have a clue what I might need to do.
I don't really want to start a new account, but might have to.
Thanks ...

Power settings can be "per user." So you've found "it" but it may be some time till I offer a better suggestion about how to set the defaults to default. For now you could move to the new account?

I can do that, but how do I still remain Admin?
I need that to do certain stuff.
I doubt I can create a new account with Admin.
I'll be patient. Maybe I'll find a solution somewhere.
Perhaps the forum.
Maybe it will be time to rebuild the system.
A pain, but sometimes you need to clean up stuff!
Thanks for the input.

Admin = admin capable account.

However giving this more thought I came up with the issue of the old monitor may be still there. Here's how to remove it. Boot SAFE MODE and head to Device Manager. Expand the diplays and delete the old monitors you don't use anymore.

New Admin account?

Is there any reason you cannot create an Admin account from the account you are now using? I assume the account you are now using is also an Admin account.

I was just thinking that you couldn't have two Admin accounts.
Maybe you can. I will try it.
I am moving today, so I'll try it later today or tomorrow.
Thanks ...

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
