Screen Saver Run's but Won't Respond to Keyboard or Mouse

Jun 25, 2010 6:20AM PDT

I have Windows 7 Ultimate Media Center Edition 32bit (x86). Everything works great, I've updated everything and found all the drivers I could find for the components in my Computer.

Here's my dilemma:

The computer will freeze at different intervals throughout the day if I leave it running, say, just to download a large file or transfer from one hdd to another.

Sometimes while the screen saver is running perfectly fine (changing the display images) the computer refuses to respond to the keyboard or the mouse. I'm using a usb cordless microsoft set so I tried plugging in directly to the mobo with a corded kb/mouse and still same thing. The keyboard lights won't even blink but the screen saver still runs.

All my internal temperatures are fine, I check with SpeedFan, I use CCleaner, Malewarebytes, Avira Free to make sure I have no bad things hiding in any folders (mind you this is one day after installing windows 7 there shouldn't be a problem).

I just can't figure this out. Could it be something wrong with my hardware not being able to handle windows 7. Below is a detailed list of my computer, made it back in 2006.

Mobo: Biostar iDEQ 330P (K8NBD) / N4SLI-A9 (nVIDIA nForce 4 AMD Hammer chipset)

Memory: 2048 MB (PC3200 DDR 400 SDRAM)

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GTX

HDD: Western Digital WD3200AAKS-00V1A0 SATA (298 GB)

Drives: 2 dvd rw ATA drives

ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!!

Thanks.

I hate to write this but both were an outdated BIOS. Your IDEQ however has a problem in the POWER department. Only 300 WATTS is slim for that 7800 video card. The only way to sniff that out is to pop something lighter on the power draw.

i'm using a DYNEX 500 Watt power supply, not sure if this is enough for everything in the case?

should i just revert to xp? Or just go on as usual, the computer works great while I stay on it for a few horus.

If they didn't issue a BIOS.

I fear you may have the same issue I encountered. That mini cube is going to run hot with all that so it's something of a guess if it's this or that. We know 7 taps the peddle harder than XP so there is a good chance that that alone can push a good machine over the edge.

does it work flawlessly without screensaver running? there are files within the screensaver program that helps it run although you cant see them in (control, alt, delete) they are still there and will cause comp to freeze as you describe. scrensaver needs these files and has priority over anything you may be doing.try it without screensaver(which can be turned off)under control panel, display, screensaver, dropdown box.none, apply and ok or enter.happy hunting let me know if this works , cboardwoman out
