Resolved Question

Screen print of bookmarks list

Oct 12, 2011 5:37PM PDT

I have done a shift-screen print of the bookmarks list down the right side of my web page. I paste this into a Word Document where I find the print size too small. I enlarge this to a readable size and then print this larger document. The printed copy is the same size as the pre-enlarged list! Why? I have tried copying the enlarged document to a new Word Document and printing from that but the result is still the small printing.
I would also like to crop the unwanted portions to either side of the main body of the list.
Can anyone please assist? I would be most grateful.
Kind regards
Peter

Try a different way.

By Bookmarks I would assume you mean Firefox Bookmarks, or may be Chrome etc, but not IE. Internet Explorer calls them Favorites.

But whether boomarks or favorites, what about a different way?

Export the bookmarks to an HTML file. HTML is a web document and all these browsers allow bookmarks to be exported to save as a backup or to import to a new browser.

Then click or double click that saved bookmark file and it should open in your browser from which you can print it from File > Print. Or, open that HTML file into Word where you can edit it as you wish, then print it.

If you want to continue with your way then there is some work to be done before pasting into a Word document. A screen print is just an image, so paste that screen print into your favorite image editor. Something like Paint would do. There you can enlarge it and save the enlarged image, and also you can crop it as you wish, re-save, then open it into Word.

Does that help?

screen print of bookmarks list (Chrome)
Oct 12, 2011 9:09PM PDT

Thanks for your quick reply Mark. First off... I did try the 'paint' option by right clicking on the word document and then going to my 'paint' file which I had previously opened. Then right clicking to 'paste' the image. "Zilch" which means no paste function in the paint screen. Did I miss something as I have never tried this before?
Secondly .....I have just tried your first comment but how do you export to an HTML file? I have right clicked on 'other bookmarks' (top right hand part of the ribbon) and on the actual list itself but cannot see anything about exporting. I have checked to see if Word has an export to HTML (please excuse my ignorance if this seems so basic). Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Thank you again for taking an interest.

Screen prints and Paint
Oct 13, 2011 4:45AM PDT

Hi Leroy.

Screen prints don't work like that. They are images and while you can paste them into a Word document it is best to paste them into Paint first, (before pasting them into a Word document), make any changes you like, eg cropping out unwanted details and resizing the image, then save that file as an image file, (any name you like such as myimage.jpg). Close down Paint then, open up Word, new document if a new one isn't already displayed, then go to Insert > Image. The words may be different but that is what you are doing, "Inserting" an image.

But the other method depends which browser you are using. For example in my Firefox browser I first click the "Firefox" menu option top left of the window, then Bookmarks > Show all Bookmarks, then in the new window, click the "Import and Backup" menu option.

See if that does it for you.

Ahh, just seen where you said Chrome
Oct 13, 2011 4:49AM PDT

Sorry Leroy I missed that.

With Chrome open, click the spanner menu item top right, below the 3 resize buttons. In the menu, mouse over Bookmarks, then select "Bookmark Manager".

In the new tab, find the "Organize" menu option and click that and you will see the "Export bookmarks to HTML file".

My error, I hope that clears it up.

Exporting Chrome Bookmarks to an HTML file
Oct 13, 2011 3:48PM PDT

Mark,
I can't thank you enough!! Fantastic. I followed your last instructions to the letter and lo and behold my printed copy was everything I wanted. Even the correct size font.
I have only just logged on at Western Australian standard time 1350 hrs.; no summer time here (that is, no putting the clocks forward in this state).
Thank you for your prompt assistance once again.
Kind regards

Exporting Chrome Bookmarks to an HTML file
Dec 12, 2011 9:45PM PST

G'day Mark, Thanks for your reply to my query and as stated I originally met with success when I did as you described. However much water has passed under the bridge and the situation has risen again where I wish to enlarge a Web page.
Following your directions everything works as expected until I go to my 'Documents' folder and double click on the file. This produces a menu titled 'File Conversions-the name of the file.html' with options for text encoding: with Windows(default); MS-DOS; other encoding and the preview pane below is full of text.

Weather.
Dec 13, 2011 4:20AM PST

Don't talk about the weather to me. I stuck my nose out the front door here (UK), yesterday and it froze, then fell off! Devil

You keep giving me reasons to emigrate...

United or City?

I live in Derby now but my own football team is Ipswich. I must have been bad in a previous life.

Leroy i'm not sure I understand what you are trying to do. Previously we were discussing trying to print Chrome Bookmarks out onto a page, large enough to be readable. But here you seem to be wanted to enlarge a web page.

Is that right? If so, there's an easy way, from within the browser. With the (Chrome) browser page open, press and hold down the CTRL key on the keyboard, then find the + (plus) key on the number pad on the right of the keyboard and press that as many times as you need to enlarge the page. This will enlarge all and any text as well as all icons and images.

To reduce the page display again, CTRL and the - (minus) key on the number pad.

However I am guessing that the problem is not that simple and that you want to print this page to paper. Is that right?

If so, then you need a different method. I have some suggestions below;

1] Simple, if it works.

With the page open, goto Options, (the gear icon), then Print. Your printer should be connected and turned on, and this should print the whole web page for you.

Browser developers haven't really mastered web page printing at the moment. At least, not when I attempted this some years ago. They may be better now. But results can often be a bit strange.

2] Save the web page, then print it.

With the web page open, goto Options > "Save Page as". A "Save As" dialog window will open and you can name the page here and also, select what to save; either the HTML only, or Web page Complete. I will be honest, I don't know the difference between the two. I tried both and they both seemed the same to me.

In Chrome when they are saved, a little window then opens at the bottom of the browser. Click that and select "Open the folder". This will open the location where the file is saved to.

Now, open your "Word" word processor and either 'drag' that file into it or goto File > Open, and navigate to where the file is to open it.

From here you can save as a word.doc, and then print it.

3] Copy the Text

If you just want the text of the web page and not any of the other stuff on the page, copy the text. Place your cursor at the start of the text you want to copy, press and hold down the left mouse button, then drag the mouse to the end of the text. Release the button and carefully move the mouse over the highlighted text without left-clicking. Right click the mouse and select Copy.

This places the text into the copy cache. Open Word then right click anywhere in the document and select Paste.

Save the document then print it.

I hope that helps.

Mark
