screen on monitor went black

Feb 15, 2009 12:11AM PST

I have a Windows 95 Nobilus PC and it was working fine when I decided to change the screen font size and icons. Somehow I got a screen that gave me figures to choose from like 1260x680 etc...
I changed the settings and did not write them down so I don't know what I HAD and what I changed it to. Now it does start up properly but when it gets to the screen it comes on Black with static across the screen. I can start it in safe mode but do not know what to change when i get there. I just want a normal screen size. Can you help? Thanks

1. Boot Safe Mode (please google it if you forgot how.)
2. In Safe Mode change it to a supported resolution.
3. Ok your way out and Start, Shutdown, etc.

Done!

Depends on what your monitor supports. See the user manual of the monitor.

There's a slider in the desktop properties. Start as much on the left side as possible. Increase if necessary and supported. 800 x 600 might be fine on a 15" CRT monitor. If your monitor is very old 640 x 480 x 16 colors might be necessary.

In post 1 you said ...

"I can start it in safe mode but do not know what to change when i get there.". Now you say: "I can't get into the safe mode to change the setting".

What changed between then and now?
How do you try to get into Safe Mode?

Since I could not find any info on my monitor I decided to just attach one that is newer that I had on another XP comp. It works fine. I will just get a newer one now for my XP PC. That was easy! I didn't realize it was a monitor problem. Thank you all for your help. You actually did guide me in the right direction afterall!
