"I have a HP 7845 running on windowsME and a HP Officejet G85 when a the fax rings it locks up my 7845 pressing ctl-alt shows MSGSRV32 not responding
most time you can end task and be fine others you have to do a cold start HELP this as been going on for 4 months the two pieces have been working togeth for 2 years"
Forget all that. I can explain it, but since its been 4 months, the easy fix is now gone. That would have been the use of System Restore or Scanreg /Restore the day or so after the problem arrived.
The issue will either be motherboard drivers or some lack of resources. The first may be difficult to the second being sort of easy to deal with.
I will not enter into any debate "it worked before" since I've dealt with this issue on scanners, printers, cameras, and more. The simple GOOGLE if you want to find some quick discussions is at http://groups.google.com/groups?&q=usbman+lockup
You get to take two roads to find the issue. I'd do the easy resource item first.
1. Review Optimizing Windows at http://www.aumha.org/articles.htm to give resources a boost. Don't get nuts and attemp 90+% free. Anything over 70 is in the zone.
2. It's my policy to not allow any pests on the machine. These are not noted by your antivirus, but a 5 tool set is noted at http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0
3. Now the hard part. Let's find what motherboard this is.
http://www.hp-expo.com/nl/dut/products/homepc/p2413a.html notes that 7845 to be a VIA chipset.
That makes it a bit easier. Remember that you get to validate anything I note here!
Over at the Via Hyperion web site, here's a note and the link to the download I would install:
"VIA Hyperion 4in1 drivers are compatible with any VIA chipset. Performance, however, is optimized for the more recent and the latest chipsets. Therefore some users of slightly older or legacy chipsets report that using the older 4.43 drivers they experience a more responsive system."

Such a motherboard driver package should help in USB lockup issues.
