Screen Flickers

Mar 27, 2007 5:29PM PDT

I'm running Vista Business 64x on a 64x dual core AMD 2GB system with an nvidia 6100 video card.

Since the install my screen has been constantly flickering. I tried all the usual suspects. I updated the video card driver, and even went to the nvidia website to get the lates 64x vista compatible driver. I lowered my screen resolution, and refresh rate. Nothing worked.

Here is the interesting part. When I go into the new "hibernate" mode, and come back out of it everything works great. Not one flicker until I do a restart, and then I have to go in and out of hibernate to fix the problem again. This is really getting old.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Re-install vista?

Wow, that's a tough one to figure out. I would guess the last thing to try is a re-install of Vista.

Vista Screen Flickering on my Vaio
Apr 1, 2007 3:50AM PDT

Does it flicker like a dying bulb or does it go black for an instant and then clear up? My computer (Vaio vgn-c290) came with a loadset including vista and has 'gone black' since I bought it. It seems to flicker when I take it out of hibernation (ironically), prior to screensaver starting, when I run itunes etc. Performance improved when I disabled most of the AERO features in Performance Information and Tools. After disabling the 'visual effects' my computer seems to be running better. But flickers are still occuring. I called tech support and they don't seem to have an answer.

Your video is totally inadequate.

You need a dedicated GPU and yours is integrated. Also make sure you RAM is at least 2gig.
The graphics will tear up a computer without the aboveHappy

The NVIDIA 6100 is a dedicated GPU
Apr 2, 2007 3:39AM PDT

Not quite sure where the confusion is. My graphics card is definately a dedicated GPU. The GeForce 6100 is even listed on the nvidia website under vista compatable video cards. Also as far as the RAM goes, I do have 2 GB of RAM even though the minimum is only 512.

It is not your memory
May 5, 2009 2:15AM PDT

I myself am running a ASUS Motherboard with a AMD 64 4000+ with 3GB of memory my video card is a nVidia 8700 GS with 512MB of memory. To be quite honest my screen flicking did not start occuring until after I had completed a windows update which had my driver for my video card. The flickering only really happens when I reboot either from sleep mode or a shutdown or restart. In either case it is a real annoyance. So it is not a question of memory that is causing your flickering I would tend to believe it has to do with your video card

I can only hope that MS comes out with a fix real soon like, like before they debut Windows 7

same problem
Apr 2, 2007 12:02PM PDT

I had the same problem. I was able to fix it doing this

1)Right-click on My Computer
2)Select Management. Allow the program to start up
3)Select Device Manager
4)find your video card
5)Right-click and select uninstall
6)allow the computer to reinstall the card automatically
7)If it doesn't work soon, try rebooting your computer.

P.S. If you were not able to use the card directly After booting the first time, you may need to try something else

When did you first notice the problem?
May 5, 2009 2:18AM PDT

when did you first notice the problem? I noticed it after windows did a automatic update and installed a new video driver for my card. After that the screen was doing the hoky poky. So did this solution that you are offering fix the problem?

I have a similar problem
Apr 11, 2007 10:07AM PDT

For me, the problem occurs when coming out to hibernation or on restart, but only occasionally. The fix that did it for me is:

Task Manager
Scroll down to Taskeng | Task Scheduler Engine
End Task

It will restart the task automatically and it should be fine.

Don't know a permanent cure though...

Found It !!!

I had this Annoying Flickering problem under Vista While painting in Photoshop every brush strokes made my screen flicker ...

this is what I did and now its completely flickers free !

Stop User Account Control (UAC) screen flicker / flash

quote:

Every time I get one of those UAC prompts asking me to authorize an administrative action my LCD screen flashes when the box pops up. This is caused by the switch to the secure desktop, similar to what happens when you hit CTRL + ALT + DELETE. The only difference is that the background is a snapshot of your desktop that gives it the effect that it is just a pop up window. Although if you look carefully you will notice it is static since the clock does not change and anything else that was animated is now static. The secure desktop provides an extra level of security to UAC by making it immune to any application that may try to automate the click on the allow button bypassing the purpose of UAC.

This sounds like a great thing but it is really annoying to me. I hate that screen flicker. Rather than disable UAC, there is a better alternative. Instead, I can just disable the secure desktop switch that causes the flicker. I know this is not as secure but it is better than disabling UAC completely.

Follow the steps below to disable UAC secure desktop:

1. Click on the Start Button and key in secpol.msc and hit Enter.
2. Navigate through Local Policies and Security Options.
3. Scroll to the bottom and right click on ?User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation? and select Properties.
4. Set the option to Disabled and hit OK.

oh ... and kill that side bar ,.,,

how do you disable that annoying side bar?
May 29, 2010 8:26AM PDT

I am running vista on a gateway laptop. I don't know if the sidebar is a gateway program, or a vista program, but it drives me crazy! How do I disable it? I can't find it listed under programs, or start-ups.

Does it make the screen flicker?

If not then you have posted in the wrong discussion, and helpers are likely to 'walk on by'.

Nvidia screen flicker with Windows 7
Oct 28, 2009 4:47AM PDT

I had a similar problem using a geforce 8500 gts. Try going to the nvidia control panel (right click on the desktop, select from drop down) and uncheck the use inverse telecine box under deinterlacing. Did the trick for me.

Disable TMM
Oct 29, 2009 11:22PM PDT

Try this :

1. Disable TMM

This tweak is responsible cutting system start time 3-5 seconds and eliminating that blank screen flash when you start Vista. This normally occcurs when Vista searches for external monitors on startup of Vista. If you are not using an external monitor, or dont switch back and forth always...turn TMM off.

Here's how to fix that annoying black flicker on boot:

1. Go start/control panel/administrative options/task scheduler.
2. On the left-hand side, click "Task Scheduler Local" (you should already be there, but just in case).
Expand "Task Scheduler Library," then "Microsoft," then "Windows," then click "MobilePC."
Up top, you'll see a task called "TMM." Click it, and on the right-hand side, click "Disable."

If you use an external monitor occasionally as I do, just press and hold FN and press F8 twice to switch monitors.
