Screen Corruption in Add or Remove programs applet

I recently had some problems with a software application affecting my CD drivers. In the end, I returned to a previous Windows restore point which was created just before I installed some software, and the CD drivers are fine.
But now, every time I go to the add or remove programs dialog and scroll down the list, there is a point where all I get is black vertical lines instead of listings of software. It appears that all of the correct entries are there, but the list is split in 2 - some programs are listed, then there are these
black lines of corruption for a while, and then the list continues. Any ideas on what has happened here?
