screen control panel problems

Mar 7, 2004 10:11PM PST

i had to check a pc with win 98, who has an agp diamond video card, but when windows starts, it says that there is a problem with the device, everytime you try to correct it or start windows appears the same message and the video options are set to 640x480 and 16 colors.

If you try to go to screen properties appears an error message that says, problem with desk.cpl file and no properties window appear. When you start windows in error mode, you can access the screen properties window and make any changes you want.

What is the problem, video card, configuration, virus, compatibility, driver? because i can?t fix

(NT) Did you install the video card's drivers?

Hint: Microsoft won't do this for you!

yes i did, same problem. I even tried with the standard vga driver from win98, and the screen tab control pops the same error message desk.cpl has problems, only in error mode i can change some screen settings.

I even reinstalled windows twice and the message is persistent

What is "reinstalled"?

There are "issues" with "over the top" installs of this OS. In fact, doing so can create more issues than it solves.

If you want to dive in and try to fix this, try...

1. Motherboard drivers. Again, these are not supplied by Microsoft and up to the system builder to find and install. I'd note whether this was needed, but no listing of the machine's chipset and more was made.

2. Another video card. It's possible this one has failed.

3. Review http://www.google.com/search?&q=+site:support.microsoft.com+%22windows+98%22+control+panel+error since there are numorous causes for the control panel to error.
