Typical for what's also

been nicknamed for longer than I've lived here because it's nearly always been run by Dems...."Virginia (a Commonwealth State), the Communist State".

It's also typical that it would be an elementary school because they are so easily influenced at such an early age for indoctrination. Do you remember all those elementary kids being taught "Obama" propaganda songs?

What film?
And, the clip that dare not speak its name, from Blazing Saddles: the mayor introducing the new sheriff, "... our new n- [forum s/w steps in]." Beautifully directed.

Actually, part of the article.
"The school's student body, WTVR reports, is about 95 percent African-American. Other possible school names in the final seven honored civil rights leaders including Oliver Hill and Barbara Johns."
Some would take this as an example of Richard's "everyday racism", and here's why. Even years after Supreme Court decisions, poorer parts of town have poorer schools. Even after the decline [but not disappearance] of redlining, pooer parts often equal Blacker parts. The name is at best a token; a less polite word for that is "sop".
Most cities now have a Martin Luther King Bl. and a Cesar Chavez Dr. although the condition of the lower economic classes may be unchanged. When Malcolm began traveling for the Nation of Islam he wanted to stay in minority areas in each town, for practical reasons. How to find them? He looked for the address of any school with Lincoln in its name. Worked.
Incidentally, J.E.B. Stuart was a successful and renowned cavalry general and a fine choice - by the standards of such things - for the name of a VA school.

US58 that runs completely

In reply to: This just in.

across the State of Virginia is called J.E.B. Stuart Highway......it may even extend west of Virginia into Tennessee. I'm going to pull a Cher and other Hollywood elites and categorically state that IF some dumbarse in VA's legislature decides to rename an entire State highway, I'm leaving here. At the very least, considering that ALL taxpayers in the State pay for the schools AND the highways and State funding has been used for buildings and statues, tearing down or renaming should be something that is on the ballot to vote on.

OMG. You reference Obama and now Cher!

heavily into environmentalist issues, so it's really no surprise to me that these officers would do this. Roanoke, even though it is a large city, there are some areas that are heavily wooded and rural...snakes keep the mice population down mightily.

People out here sometimes go on snake killing sprees.

In reply to: This State has always been

Full disclosure: The Western diamondback rattler IS large, quick, especially venomous, and quicker than most to strike in defense. [No viper attacks humans for food. We're too big, and snakes ain't stoopid.]
Anyway, the following year we have problems with hantavirus, spread by rodents and their fleas.

Animal populations self regulate

In reply to: People out here sometimes go on snake killing sprees.

They need little more than two things...a food source and safe breeding space. Populations shrink or grow based on availability of these. When man moved into their space (no...it wasn't the other way around) he decided which species were desirable to be around and which were not. The results were often disastrous. When a chicken farmer, John, saw hawks and owls were about and the poultry thinning out, he got his gun and brought down every hawk and owl he could. Mom Nature got her revenge by sending the farmer a plague of mice and rats (also preyed upon by the birds). A house full of rodents resulted in John being divorced by his wife. Poor John didn't expect that Mom Nature would turn on him. She, however, takes no prisoners.
