Scheduled tasks

May 21, 2004 7:42AM PDT

The "Scheduled tasks" are set to run during the night, but they don't. (I got out of bed during the night to check). Neither do they run if I leave the computer in safe mode. Nor when I turn off the programs that run in the background. I should say that Norton Antivirus runs as scheduled but Scandisk and Defrag don't. We are running Windows ME. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Scandisk and Defrag will fail on most machines today. It's a side effect of all we add to the base OS. ALL that is noted at http://support.microsoft.com/?id=222469 applies to your issue.

You'll see many answers, but this article pretty much covers it all.

For example, items in the Quicklaunch can thwart this (noted in the article) as well as a firewall.

Thank you Bob and Grif for the information. It just occurred to me that it probably doesn't work because of the way the hard drive is set up. We have only one physical hard drive but it is partitioned into three. When I do a manual Scandisk or Defrag I have to shut down all programs running in the background, and then I have to prompt the program to do each theoretical drive. It doesn't just automatically do all the drives consecutively. If there is noone there during the night to prompt it, it probably woudn't do the job no matter what I do. I think I will just have to live with it. Thanks.
