I find that often now , when I scan, I
am getting two vertical columns.. one
each side... kind of "interference "
could this be my scanner getting old ?

then sometimes I get perfect results.

the scanner is probably 7 or 8 years old now

it works ok but these vertical columns are ruining
the pics
I can reduce them by increasing the contrast etc
but they always seem to be there

Then its time to get another one. Even if a free one. I had itemized the ideas but you didn't tell if it worked on another PC. That's not a great test, rarely helps so no loss.
