If its broken, there's not much to do. But a common issue repeats too many times about things USB. While its repeated many times at http://www.usbman.com , many are not aware that things USB require that the motherboard drivers be installed or things USB tend to give the owner nothing but grief.
Hopefully that's your issue.

Ever since my HP Scanjet motor burned out (just after the 3-year warranty expired), I've desperately needed a new scanner. As finances are a major problem, I got a Umax at a garage sale for $3.00, of course it didn't work with any downloadable software. Then I recently was given a CanoScan D1250U2 - brand new, in the box, from a neighbor who got it with their new computer. When I had trouble getting the install to work, I called tech support &, after getting my identifying data, they informed me that I didn't qualify for any warranty because I wasn't the original owner, but I could get email support. After many back-and-forths, they finally wrote that they couldn't help & I needed to have the scanner serviced - remember, IT'S BRAND NEW! I don't want to just toss it, but I can't afford to even have it checked. What can I do? I have Windows '98 in an eMachine 300c/330c with an AMD-k6 3D processor and 512k RAM.
