scanner disappears

by gilarts / March 24, 2004 7:12 AM PST

I purchased a new computer and am running XP home edition on it. It is a "HP Pavilion" and I have a HP Deskjet printer. The problem is that when I try to use the scanner, a box pops-up and tells me that the scanner cannot be found. When I check the device managerit says that it is there, and when I check "properties" it says that it is running properly.
I have checked the power connection, the serial port, all connections seem fine. I have looked for updates to the scanner(Primax/Primascan) for new drivers and found none. any ideas would be appreciated. thanx

Has it ever worked properly with your new computer? XP can be very particular how peripherals are installed. And if you don't do it just right, the machine might not work.

Being that this is a serial port connection, is it fair to say this is an "older" scanner- say, about 3 yrs. old? In my experience with serial port connected scanners, I've had to turn the scanner on before boot-up. Is the printer connected to the scanner, then the scanner to the serial port? I'd turn on both devices before booting up. If seperately connected, I'd disconnect the scanner, remove all drivers (look at the manual for a clean uninstall; often you have to remove twain and twunk files, depending on the type of scanner), then do a reinstall PER THE INSTRUCTIONS. On my old Microtek scanner, there was a utility....can't remember the name...I'd hit the button and it somehow forced the system to recognize the scanner; so, do you have a "toolbox" type of utility that may give you that option? Best I can think of off the top of my head. I recently upgraded to a Canon LiDe 20 for $50; nice bundled software, usb powered, beautiful scans, and even has a stand so it sit on its side. Maybe time for an upgrade. Could be the scanner is simply dead, despite device manager reporting it as working. BTW, I did a google search for "Primascan" and found XP drivers; not knowing your model number, I don't know if it would apply to you...are you using 98 drivers? Try google with your model #, you may get a hit. Good luck.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
