Press Start, Help and Support and type in scandisk

Or even scandisc, whichever works.

It tells you what changed.

Are you using the onboard support?

The scandisk utility which could run with defrag in Win98 is not present with XP. You can run the old chkdsk which scandisk replaced. In order to "repair" problems, you use the old /f switch (fix). You must do this from a command line. Type in "chkdsk/f" (without quotes). This will run the next time Windows XP starts and the operation will be obvious. Hope this helps.

Sumer, You Can Run 'Error Checking/Chkdsk' Now
Jul 31, 2004 9:23AM PDT

As mentioned previously, Scandisk isn't present on XP like in older Windows versions. "Error Checking/Chkdsk" is the new program that provides a disk check and can be run a few different ways, but I prefer to do it like this:

Open "My Computer", RIGHT click on the C drive icon, choose "Properties". When that loads, click on the "Tools" tab, then click on the "Check Now" button in the "Error Checking" section. When that little window loads, click on BOTH boxes, then click on "Start Now". A message will pop up saying that Error Checking will run after you restart the computer, so......Restart the computer. Error Checking will run automatically after the restart and it locks you out from doing anything until it's finished. It takes a little time to perform the task but after it's finished,(assume 30-60 minutes) it will restart into Windows.

Hope this helps.

Sumer,

In my opinion, Windows XP's file system is much more stable than that normally used by Windows 98 and as a result I don't run "Error Checking/Chkdsk" as often as I run Scandisk in older versions of Windows. Error Checking/Chkdsk also tends to take quite a bit longer. It's a personal choice and you can do what you like cause it won't harm the computer either way.

I still run Error Checking occasionally, but I don't run it everytime I run Defrag. I tend to Defrag our WinXP's about once a month, (maybe more often on machines where lots of files are run through the hard drive), while I only run Error Checking every two months or so. But like I said earlier, it's a personal choice.

Hope this helps.

Hi SumerBrez,
Go to Start > Run > chkdsk c: /f /r then reboot.
Don't forget the spaces before c: and the two /'s
