by Carr / April 5, 2005 6:06 AM PDT

When i ScanDisk C Drive in SafeMode (WIN98SE)I frequently get, "ScanDisk has restarted 10 times because windows or another program has been writing to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable Scandisk to finish sooner". I'm in SafeMode and have no programs running! what's this about and houw to correct it?

No programs running.

I remember a comparable discussion somewhere in these forums. That PC was connected to the internet by cable, and somehow the internet or the cable modem knocked on the door regularly causing this message. Disconnecting the modem (adsl might do the same) during the scandisk was the solution here. I won't take the trouble to search for the discussion (might be difficult) so you can read it yourself, but it's so easy to try that I would start with this.

If that isn't the cause find msinfo32.exe (mine is in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\msinfo folder) and run it (can be done in Safe Mode also). Post the list of "Active Applications" so that we can see if there is anything suspected there. Most, if not all, will be trusted Windows components, but if that are really the only one (and a modem is excluded) you wouldn't get this message, one should say.

Hope this helps.

Carr, Standard or 'Thorough'?
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / April 5, 2005 7:52 AM PDT
In reply to: ScanDisk in SafeMode

A "Thorough" scan takes longer and is liable to throw this error more often. Although most programs are NOT running in Safe Mode, make sure that your screensaver is turned off as well.

If all else fails, run Scandisk in DOS. For Win95/98 users: Reboot the computer, pressing F8, once per second, till the selection screen loads. Use the up/down/left/right arrows to navigate to the MS DOS Command prompt section, then press enter. When the DOS prompt loads, type "scandisk" (without the quotes). Press enter. After it runs in the standard mode, it will then ask you if you want to run the "thorough" version. Choose yes or no. ?Thorough? takes a very long time, but does check your hard drive sectors. When you?re done, navigate to the ?Exit? selection, press ?Enter?, then press the power button to turn off the puter. Restart the computer and it will boot into Windows normally.

Hope this helps.

Scan Disk

Grif, I pretty well follow your suggestions on this. I have used Standard and Thorough depending on time available. The low system resources still bothers me and I can't get a handle on how to review programs running. Turning off my modem while in SafeMode does work tho. many thanks, Carr
