Scan keeps restarting

Aug 2, 2004 8:14AM PDT

I'm trying to get a five-year old Dell Inspiron 7000 that has never had regular maintenance and has been slowing down to start running smoothly again. Scandisk keeps restarting -- I think because the disk changes in the middle of the scan. It is not connected to the internet, and Scandisk is the only thing on the taskbar. Might there be a worm at work? The computer would only boot in safe mode until I uninstalled Norton Antivirus (I plan to reinstall it before getting back on the internet). Anyone want to tell me how to get hidden processes to stop in Windows 98?

Quick answer:

If you have more than 64MB memory, go to system properties -> performance -> virtual memory. Turn it OFF, reboot, scan, restore the virtual memory afterwards.

Yup. Sure know how to stop these processes. Just enter 'msconfig' in the start box. (Keyboard shortcut winkey+R)
This may be something else however.
