Scan Disk Won't Complete Task - 3 Questions

Nov 24, 2003 1:23AM PST

QUESTION 1) When running scandisk on wife's PC (Win98SE), I keep getting the message, (program has restarted 10-times, do you want to continue to get this msg?). I've tried to do a work-around by running Scandisk in the SAFE mode, which stops the message. Is that the cure?

QUESTION 2) But, it still doesn't seem to finish, i.e., I don't get a completion message. It just stops when it gets close to the end (see Question 3), asking me if I want to start again. What can be done so I can confirm that it completed the task?

QUESTION 3) The window that comes up when running scandisk shows the progress, e.g., 81,816 of 1,616,000. But, when it gets further along, e.g., 1,100,000 of 1,616,000, the window is too small to show the 1,616,000, so it will look something like this: 1,100,00 of 1,6; The window won't let me resize so it's too small. Any solution to enlarging the window so it shows all of the numbers?

For you, maybe not. While it lets scandisk finish and exit, it caused more questions instead.

QUESTION 2) But, it still doesn't seem to finish, i.e., I don't get a completion message. It just stops when it gets close to the end (see Question 3), asking me if I want to start again. What can be done so I can confirm that it completed the task?

Ahh, the age-old debate. Should programs do their task and vanish or should you deluge the users with OK confirmation boxes. Remember that SCANDSKW.EXE needs to be able to be SCHEDULED. If it didn't finish and exist, then it wouldn't be able to be used as a maintenance without bothering the user tool. I don't see a big issue here, but you may have other requirements for SCANDISK that it's not fulfilling. With reservation, you may want to look at Symantec's Norton Disk Doctor which may interact with you more.

No. When Windows 98 came out, the size of hard disks were much smaller. There are no plans to fix such display or cosmetic issues with this OS. I am not the one who decided this, but since you asked, I'm being nice and sharing that developments and fixes are few and far between for this aged OS.

Did you review this article? http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=222469 notes a most common effect where the Quick Launch bar is the cause of the restart. Other items are noted as well.

And again, there are no plans to fix that issue.

#1 This seems to be an issue with back ground task.
Screen savers/av/whatever.
You can play around with shutting down things before running scandisk or the work around is safe mode.

#2 When you start scandisk there is an adv button.
Click it and select display summary.

#3 The display box is a fixed size so whatever fits is what you get.

Franky's easy solution. Kill the baby (ScanDisk)
and use an alternate like Norton Disk Doctor
or McAfee Utilities similar application.

1 At C:\, change the attributes of: MSDOS.SYS
file to -H -S -R

2 Edit this file and at [Options] add the line

AutoScan=0
