SCAN DISK "Not Responding"

by pepperkay / November 29, 2004 9:27 PM PST

My Scan Disk will run and scan approx. 40% of the disk and then becomes "not responding" ... this occurs time after time ...

I have disabled the Firewall, Anti-Virus, Screensaver ... nothing appears able to make it work past this point ...

I can't run Defrag because it spots an error(s) on the disk and tells me I need to run Scan Disk ...

What can I do to get this up and working properly ?? ...

Thanks,

Pepper Kay

No operating system noted, but many find it will work in SAFE MODE.

Hi All:

I've tried everything everyone has suggested with NO luck ...

I run Windows ME, Pentium 4, 850 Mhz chip, 512 RAM, etc., etc. ...

SCAN DISK will run until there are 8 blue boxes in the Progress Barometer on the SCAN DESK window ... at that time, the program stops working (responding) ...

I can't DEFRAG because there are errors on SCAN DISK ...

I've tried everything that everyone has suggested, all to NO avail...I've checked/tried all the LINKS that people have sent me...

I've tried running regular mode, in SAFE mode, from the W- ME CD disk ... running it thru Windows... I shut down all unnecessary programs via the TASK MANAGER... I turn off the firewall and screen saver... I've gone to RUN, done MSCONFIG-STARTUP and checked off most items there too...

I've tried 3rd party SCAN DISK/DEFRAG software with the same results...

Any further suggestions ??...

Thanks,

Pepper

Most Hard disk manufacturers provide a download diagnostic tool to run on their hardware. This can be put on a floppy, and run to check for errors. Mine has 3 levels of diagnosis depending on whether there are problems or not.

Re: SCAN DISK "Not Responding" Problem SOLVED !!

Hi All:

For those of you who have had this problem, I've found a solution ...

Do a Google search for 'GEODisk2' and when you find it, download and install ...

It did a Scan Disk in less than 3 minutes and a Defrag in less than 4 minutes for me today and my Windows tools are still NOT working ...

It looks the same on screen as the Windows tools but THIS WORKS !! ...

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
