Hi,
My wifes computer running win98 v2 keeps dropping out and then runs scandisk. I defragged it hoping this may help but it is still doing it. Any help appreciated.

Dropping out?

Does it start to boot and the logo screen switches to scandisk? It will do this automatically if you don't shut down properly. Does scandisk finish as ok and then continue booting or going back to desktop?
Give more info.
And I assume you mean Windows98 Second Edition?

Hi,
The computer is always shut down correctly.
According to my wife, if it is left on for a while unattended, it suddenly switches off and runs scandisk and then reboots to windows (2nd edition). I have run scandisk from dos with no errors reported and also defragged it, but this doesn't help at all.

control panel>power management, change the Hdd timeout to 2 hr or more and see if it takes longer to happen. Some PC's don't like this Hdd power down.

It is normal for scan disk to run when the system is not shutdown normally. I would check for a loose connection starting with the input power (cable, plug, receptacle, and the fuse box). Then the computer. A little shake or bump and if you are brave open the computer and check for something loose.

If it's not set to go into sleep or HDD power down, it's sounds a bit like a virus...!!! or time for a rebuild. Back up all your work as soon as possible.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
