Scan disk & Defrag

Feb 26, 2004 4:37AM PST

Two questions on scan and defrag in XP.Im used to 98.

1.I ran disc scan ok but it only flashes the results.I could'nt see the results as they don't stay on screen.Any way to keep results up and readable?
2.Ran defrag in safe mode and when finished it said some files not able to defrag and shows the list.Is this because of safe mode and is it the norm?
Im very new to XP.

Fish,

The results of the scan will be found in the "application" event log. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Application.

"Winlogon" should be the event you're looking for if your scan was done at logon.

As to your second question I do believe this is normal and seldom will there be a complete defrag for various reasons. This is nothing to cause undue concern. A defrag of a drive only needs to be done infrequently... maybe once a month or such.

1. The article [Q314848] describes how to defragment your disk drive volumes, describes the limitations of using Disk Defragmenter Microsoft Management Console (MMC) which is based on the full retail version of Executive Software Diskeeper, and outlines three methods of defragmenting. The version included provides limited functionality in maintaining disk performance by defragmenting volumes that use the FAT, FAT32, or NTFS file system.

2. The article [[Q305781]] describes step-by-step how to perform maintenance on disk volumes that helps to preserve the performance and general operation of a system.

Note: Delete any unnecessary files, such as temporary files using Disk Cleanup, [Q310312]. However, it can leave an inordinate amount of wasted space on you hard drive. When run, one of the available options offers to delete Temporary files. Unfortunately, this option may display a value of zero even if your Temporary folder contains hundreds of useless files since this value lists only file in that folder with a date more than one week old. Therefore, if files still exists after using the tool, you may at your convenience delete any and all files unnecessary.
