SBC/Yahoo DSL disconnects

Sep 15, 2005 4:23AM PDT

Not certain this is the right forum. Using EMachine with Windows XP, Yahoo Speedstream 5100 and Belkin Wireless 2000 and DSL through SBC/Yahoo.
I have had this setup (alternating Belkin with Netgear modems) and consistantly get disconnects, server not found etc. Have had service call in house, couldn't find p?roblem, now won't return calls, have replaced Speedstream box, had SBC check lines coming into the house and all okay.
I have filed a complaint with the FCC but with 10 disconnects this morning I am getting desperate.
Any ideas?

Just a few things.

1. Is the firmware current?

Sadly, this is not the maker's responsibility. We get to do that.

2. How do you know it's them?

With all that spyware out there, complaints like yours are traced to spyware, virus, trojan, misconfigured this or that some 99+% of the time. Your post is too light on details.

Jonas' Reply on Firmware

By firmware, I assume you mean the PC, laptop etc.
I believe it is. I do bi-weekly MS updates and run Adaware and Spybot regularly.
Need to redo Norton but have used regularly in the past.

I don't see you listing the router in there. It's a common oversight and one that we all wish we didn't have to keep up with.

Firmware for router?
Sep 15, 2005 9:58AM PDT

I don't know what you mean. The software disc from SBC/Yahoo for the Speedstream box was installed as was the process for the Belkin wireless.
What is missing and how do I proceed?
I appreciate your help

Bingo. As an example, a Belkin example.

Since you don't tell exact models, I'll provide an example but not the real deal. In short you have to visit the product's maker for new software (it's called firmware for this devices) that corrects flaws that existed when they shipped the product.

Read the PDF file you see at http://web.belkin.com/support/download/downloaddetails.asp?download=1724&lang=1

Each device has it's own update and method.

I think you've found an issue to fix.

Thank you. I printed this off and will contact them.
Need to leave for a few days. I will post again soon.
Thank you again.

Another thing...

Let's hope that it really IS your router that disconnects you because then it would be easy to fix (with the firmware as suggested)

I had Earthlink/Covad DSL few years ago. After I got it, it worked fine for about 3 months. Then my problems began. It started disconnecting and not syncing. The WAN light just blinked for days at a time.

Multiple calls to Tech Support did not help. Apparently they had levels of tech support, i.e, if level 1 guy can't help, I'm "Escalated" to level 2.

Level 1 response was "shut down the modem and the computer, then restart". That obviously did not work. Level 2 guy began with saying exactly the same thing. Well, if Level 1 guy said that, and I am talking to you then I guess it didn't help now did it?!?

To make a long story short, they sent an engineer down to my house. He basically told me that I am on an edge of their coverage are and that basically my only choice was to cancel, which I did. Now I have verizon DSL, and (know on wood) I did not have problems since.
