Probably you do something wrong, but since you don't tell what you do in what program, it's difficult to say.

What I do in Internet Explorer in Windows 7 is to right click on the picture and choose "Save picture as ..." from the context menu.

i right click on picture, save image as and then the only options are webpage comlete and webpage html only from drop down box

That's strange.

That are the options expected when you click on a non picture part of the page.

I selected a picture for you try. it's the picture (of Anish, Mark and Nick) you see if you open http://www.oew.leisb.nl/ (it's safe, and you don't need to understand the text), Please try the right click in all three common browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome - the last 2 are free downloads, you'll like them) and tell what happens.

If it's fine please answer with a site and picture that doesn't work with you, so we can check what's different.

right click the image

if you are unable to right click the image and get the download or save option, then most likely the website owner is running scripts preventing visitors from getting pictures without permission.

Many images are not jpeg.

Just save them and convert them later. I've used IRFANVIEW for years to do this.

save to another folder

from the desktop and give it a jpg ending. Quit saving things to desktop folder, that's not what it's for. In linux files saved to desktop get changed to filename.desktop , so maybe windows is doing similar?

It's not jpg. OK. But what is it? The filetype in My Computer/Explorer might be a good answer. If not good enough, set the folder options to show the extension.
