General discussion

saving file makes the file smaller

Mar 4, 2010 5:28PM PST

I was using Paint from my PC to view a file (size 4.5 MB jpeg file), then without any changes, I saved it. The file size is now 1.39 MB jpeg file. It looks okay when I viewed it "full size" on screen.

But how can I save a file without downsizing the filesize so much, and keeping a jpeg file?

Why save the file if you already have it ...

and didn't intend to make any changes?

- Where did that file come from?
- Use irfanview to compare the properties (such as number of pixels) of the two files.

want to edit file (pictures) w/o greatly reducing filesize
Mar 29, 2010 5:02PM PDT

Hi,
The file is a jpg file. I saved it w/o first making any changes because I wanted to see if it will make my picture file size smaller...and it did.

I normally do make changes (like cropping or remove red eyes...) and then I will save the changes. Then I noticed that my file size got reduced. I thought somehow my changes reduced the file size...that's why I tried just saving it without even making changes and it still greatly reduce the file size.

I will look into infraview as you've suggested.

Thanks.

In that case ...

Paint isn't the right photo-editor for you.

Try irfanview, Picasa, paint.net, Photoshop etcetera.
